Sister Clara

Our History

Gingerbread Land Inc. was founded by Sister Clara in 1989, who recognized the need for a local organization dedicated to helping those in need of hope, love, and encouragement within her neighborhood. Since then, we have grown into a thriving nonprofit, serving thousands of individuals each year.  Sister Clara was described as a 'living saint' in the community.  She stood strong in the face of some of society's most destructive elements, such as drugs, poverty, and apathy.

In a neighborhood that has long struggled with crime, she had taken in babies that were born to drug addicted mothers.  For these children, she essentially became their stand-in mother, not only by providing the basics to counter the physical trauma of being born into addiction, but also providing for their emotional and spiritual development.

About Gingerbread Land Inc.

Our History

For over two decades before her death, Sister Clara's program eventually took on more than 400 children of all ages.  As Gingerbread House grew into Gingerbread Land, she would obtain house after house on the block of North 1st Street in Milwaukee, sprucing up the exteriors with a colorful paint scheme and ornamentation.  Sister Clara earned the respect of neighbors, and her presence had ensured that negative activity wasn't welcomed on her block.  Working with Milwaukee's most vulnerable young children, she has set an example for helping to build up the community, one person at a time.

Sister Clara was laid to rest in August 2021, but her mission and vision continues to be a model and staple for Gingerbread Land Inc.
